Matthew Mcconaughey has repeatedly altered his appearance for the sake of starring in lead roles that are displayed across the silver screen of Hollywood. He has been willing to go to extremes on many occasions while he bounces from one character to the next. This extreme has entered new heights with his role as Ron in The Dallas Buyers Club, he has followed an insane diet to drop 47 pounds over the course of 4 months in order to project a life like image of a man diagnosed with AIDS and on his way to his death bed.
The Extreme Dallas Buyers Club Diet
So how exactly does a healthy man drop 47 pounds in 4 months and live to tell about it? Though not recommended, Matthew Mcconaughey made his extreme transformation by consuming minimal calories, an amount far under what any healthy person should have in order to continue living.
The diet Transformation
To achieve extreme weight-loss, Matthew Mcconaughey dropped his food consumption down to a small cup of vegetables, one piece of fish or chicken and a small portion of Tapioca Pudding. This amount is less than many people eat for one meal and substantially less than what the average person eats throughout the day. He amazingly managed to hang on to his energy throughout this extreme diet, a feat that had to require an incredible amount of determination and strength.
This diet allowed Matthew Mcconaughey to continuously drop pounds each week and helped him to achieve a sickly look. An important step in his transformation so that he could pull off the look he needed to portray the homophobic redneck turned outcast and ally when diagnosed with HIV.
Adding a Look of Sickness
Diet alone wouldn’t get rid of the famous Matthew Mcconaughey tan that we all know and love. Had he stepped in front of the camera to portray an AIDS patient on The Dallas Players Club with a tan, the realism of the character would have lacked realistic parameters.
In order to lose the tan he seems to always have, Matthew Mcconaughey said goodbye to sunlight and began living life as a vampire. He purposefully stayed inside anytime the sun was out. Not only did he lack total sun, he also had the dying hunger of a vampire.
Was it All Worth it?
Some people may say that going through such extremes for the sake of achieving a character role in a movie may be a little extreme, however Matthew Mcconaughey consistently is nominated and wins awards during the Oscars. His role in the Dallas Players Club is no different, he has managed to pull in the Golden Globe, Critics Choice for Best Actor and the Screen Actors Guild Award given for an outstanding performance as a leading male actor. Though Mcconaughey will repeatedly transform his body, he makes his extreme transformations pay off. He is constantly achieving intense roles that are based on characters that are complex and are experiencing a pivotal point within their lives, this is what wins awards while at the Oscars and this is what makes Matthew Mcconaughey stand out as a seasoned actor.
